NEW DELHI: Indian athlete Avinash Sable achieved a commendable fifth-place finish in the men’s 3000m steeplechase event at the Xiamen leg of the Diamond League meeting. This achievement secured his qualification for the grand finale, which will take place in Eugene, USA, later this month.
Sable, aged 28, clocked a time of 8 minutes 16.27 seconds in the race, which was slightly below his season’s best of 8:11.63 and his national record time of 8:11.20.
The event was won by Olympic and world champion Soufiane El Bakkali of Morocco, who completed the race in 8:10.31. Samuel Firewu (8:11.29) from Ethiopia and Amos Serem (8:14.41) from Kenya secured the second and third positions, respectively.
Sable, the silver medallist in the 2022 Commonwealth Games, earned four points from this race, bringing his total to 11 points from four events in the season. He qualified for the Diamond League finals, scheduled for September 16 in Eugene, USA. This marks his debut appearance in a Diamond League final.
Sable will be joining fellow Indian athletes Neeraj Chopra, the Olympic and world champion in javelin throw, who will compete on September 16, and Murali Sreeshankar, a long jumper, who is set to compete on September 17.
In earlier Diamond League Meetings this year, Sable had finished 10th in Rabat (Morocco), fifth in Stockholm, and sixth in Silesia (Poland).
In men’s triple jump, national record holder Praveen Chithravel finished fifth with a mediocre 16.42m effort while Abdulla Aboobacker was sixth with 16.25m. Chithravel’s national record stands at 17.37m, while Aboobacker, the reigning Asian champion, has a personal best of 17.19m.
Both failed to qualify for the Diamond League finals as they ended at ninth and tenth respectively on the standings.
The top six in the standings in field events and top 10 in distance races qualify for the DL finals.
Both Chithravel and Aboobacker had also failed to qualify for the final round of the World Championships last month.
Chithravel had finished sixth in the Monaco leg of Diamond League while Aboobacker had taken the same spot in Florence.
