On October 27, CERT-In warned Apple users of ‘multiple vulnerabilities’

NEW DELHI: Even as controversy erupts over Apple’s ‘alert’ to certain iPhone users over potential hacks from “state-sponsored attackers”, it now comes to light that India’s cyber watchdog CERT-In had on October 27 also warned the company’s users of “multiple vulnerabilities” that could allow attackers to access sensitive information, execute arbitrary code, and bypass security restrictions.
CERT-In, which issues regular warnings over potential weaknesses in operating systems and other procedures of devices and software, said that the affected software related to Apple’s iOS 15.8, 16.7.2 and 17.1 operating systems.
There were also vulnerabilities noticed in certain OS versions of MacBook and also Apple Watch.
“Multiple vulnerabilities have been reported in Apple products which could allow an attacker to access sensitive information, execute arbitrary code, bypass security restrictions, cause denial of services conditions, bypass authentication, gain elevated privileges and perform spoofing attacks on the targeted system,” CERT-In had said in its advisory.
Apple created a furore on Tuesday after it sent out iMessage ‘alerts’ to several individuals, including some opposition party members, that their iPhones are “being targeted by state-sponsored attackers” who may be able to “remotely access your sensitive data.”
The Centre was quick to deny allegations of any kind of state-initiated snooping, which would violate the privacy of citizens and ordered a probe.
