Chess is in good hands for the future, says Magnus Carlsen after winning his first chess World Cup title | Chess News

NAGPUR: After winning his maiden World Cup title on Thursday, Magnus Carlsen said in an interview, “Chess is in good hands for the future. I think this generation of players born between 1990-94 really have dominated for a long time and finally now with these youngsters born 2003+, we have a generation that’s worthy of succeeding us when the time comes and the time could be fairly soon.”
Carlsen, who is not sure of participating again in the World Cup, has “no specific plans for playing any tournaments this year”.

Carlsen said he entered the World Cup at the last moment and that was “somewhat emotional decision,” and added, “I wouldn’t say winning the World Cup increases the chances that I’ll play this event again – that’s for sure.”

For Praggnanandhaa the World Cup was an “exhausting event,” but the 18-year-old was elated with his overall performance. He said, “The World Cup was an exhausting event for me, and I am happy that I made it to the finals. Overall, I played well and qualifying for the Candidates is the main thing.”

On the summit clash with Carlsen, he added, “I just wanted to give my best and was calm before the tiebreaks. Today’s first game of the tiebreak was important but when I missed the chance in the middle game he just became strong after that, and it was difficult to get back against such a strong player. He played a better endgame. I could have played better, but it’s okay.”
