England beat Nigeria on penalties to reach Women’s World Cup quarter-finals | Football News

[ad_1]

NEW DELHI: England secured their spot in the quarter-finals of the Women’s World Cup after defeating Nigeria 4-2 on penalties in Brisbane on Monday. The last-16 match had ended in a goalless draw at the end of extra time, leading to a tense shootout.

Chloe Kelly proved to be the hero, scoring the winning penalty that sent the European champions, England, into the last eight. Their next opponents will be either Colombia or Jamaica, setting up an exciting quarter-final clash.

During the regulation time, England faced challenges when one of their players was sent off. Forward Lauren James, who had been the team’s top scorer with three goals in the group stage, received a red card in the 87th minute for an ill-tempered stamp on the back of Michelle Alonzi after a tangle between the two players. As a result, England played with 10 women throughout the extra time.
Despite the disadvantage of being a player down, England displayed determination and composure during the penalty shootout. Beth England, Rachel Daly and Alex Greenwood also converted their penalties, contributing to England’s hard-fought victory.
