NEW DELHI: England fast bowler David Willey expressed confidence in his decision to retire from international cricket after playing a crucial role in England’s 93-run victory over Pakistan in their last group game at the World Cup in Kolkata.
Willey, a left-arm seamer, announced his retirement during the tournament, citing his exclusion from the central contract list as a major factor in his decision. In his final game for England, he claimed 3-56, reaching 100 wickets in his 73rd One Day International (ODI) as England successfully defended their total of 337-9 by bowling out Pakistan for 244.
“I’m very confident in my decision that today was my last game of cricket for England,” said Willey after the match. “Do I want to go to the Caribbean (for an ODI series in December) and run drinks and not know where I stand and just feel like a third wheel again…being the only one without a contract, probably not, so I’m done.”
The 33-year-old seamer, who has also represented England in 43 Twenty20 internationals, explained that the lack of a central contract and the team’s decision to go in a different direction post-World Cup were key factors in his retirement.
Willey comes from a cricketing family, with his father Peter having played for England before becoming an umpire. Reflecting on his career, Willey stated, “Looking back to being a kid, I could only have dreamt of playing as many games of cricket for England, so I’m immensely proud of that.”
Despite the regret associated with his decision, Willey mentioned that he called time on his career with the intention of enjoying his last few games, and reaching 100 wickets was a special milestone. “The timing of my announcement was so I can enjoy my last three games, and I’ve very much done that. On the phone with my wife this morning, she said go on – just get to 100 wickets; it’d be a nice way to finish,” he added.
