Chandrayaan 3 Moon Photos: Nasa LRO shares images of ISRO’s vikram landing site | India News

BENGALURU: Days after it had released photographs of the Moon showing a new crater that it said was likely to be the impact site of Luna-25, Russia’s crashed lunar probe, US’ Nasa has released pictures of the landing site of Vikram, the Chandrayaan-3 lander.
The imaging was done by the onboard camera of the space agency’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) which has been going around the Moon since 2009.
“Isro Chandrayaan-3 touched down on the Moon on August 23. The Chandrayaan-3 landing site is located about 600km from the lunar south pole. The LROC (short for LRO Camera) acquired an oblique view (42-degree slew angle) of the lander four days later. The bright halo around the vehicle resulted from the rocket plume interacting with the fine-grained regolith (soil),” Nasa said.

It added that the LRO is managed by its Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, for the Science Mission Directorate at the agency’s headquarters in Washington.
“Launched on June 18, 2009, LRO has collected a treasure trove of data with its seven powerful instruments, making an invaluable contribution to our knowledge about the Moon. Arizona State University manages and operates LROC,” Nasa said.
