Uber Announces New Shuttle, Delivery Services

Uber officials said at the company’s annual product showcase, according to Reuters, that it would expand an earlier partnership with retail giant Costco and debut a new service called “Uber Shuttle.”
Reserving Transit Seats with Uber Shuttle
Under the shuttle service, Uber will collaborate with local transit fleet operators for the use of vehicles with between 14 and 55 seats. Uber users could then reserve up to five seats on those vehicles in busy areas, such as sporting events, concerts, or airports.
Reuters noted that Lyft, Uber’s major rideshare rival, already offers a feature in its app for accessing transit and ferry services.
New Discounts from Uber
The delivery expansion, meanwhile, would offer Costco members using Uber Eats discounts on delivery orders and on annual subscriptions. Other company announcements included a new student discount and the ability for users to schedule shared rides.
Maintaining Growth in a Growing Rideshare Market
Analysts noted that the new services come amid growing competition with Lyft in a rapidly maturing North American rideshare market. They also appear to be an attempt to sustain the company’s revenues after it reported its first profitable year in history last year.
