Pakistani fisherman becomes millionaire overnight after selling rare fish

NEW DELHI: In Pakistan‘s Karachi, a fisherman from the Ibrahim Hyderi village, Haji Baloch, found himself an unexpected millionaire after auctioning a rare catch with potent medicinal properties. He and his team reeled in the prized “Sowa” or golden fish from the depths of the Arabian Sea. This exclusive catch, known for its valuable healing elements, was sold for a staggering 70 million rupees at the Karachi harbor.
Mubarak Khan from the Pakistan Fishermen Folk Forum highlighted the significance of this lucrative sale, emphasizing the rarity and priceless nature of the Sowa fish.With substances from its belly renowned for their medicinal attributes and even use in surgical procedures, each fish fetched an astonishing 7 million rupees at auction.
Beyond its economic value, the Sowa holds cultural and traditional importance, deeply ingrained in local medicine and culinary practices. Weighing between 20 to 40 kilograms and reaching lengths of up to 1.5 meters, this coveted species is in high demand in East Asian nations.
Haji Baloch expressed his astonishment at stumbling upon this bountiful haul in the open seas of Karachi, acknowledging the unexpected stroke of luck it brought. Determined to share his newfound wealth, he plans to divide the proceeds among his team of seven.
Notably, these fish grace the coast solely during their breeding season, adding to their mystique and scarcity.
