NEW DELHI: On Halloween, volunteers participating in a routine cleanup around Oakland’s Lake Merritt discovered a man’s body crammed inside a discarded suitcase, reported the New York Post.
Volunteer Kevin Shomo, speaking to KTVU, recounted the shocking incident that unfolded around 11 a.m. on that Tuesday morning.
“We grabbed one end and we realized it was too heavy. So we pulled it close enough to us and we said, ‘Oh wow, this thing is heavy,’” Kevin Shomo was quoted as saying by The Post.
“So we unzipped it … and that’s what we found,” he said of the gruesome discovery of a man stuffed inside “kind of like in a fetal position. I was surprised it was a body in there,” Shomo said of the unidentified victim, who appeared to be in his 30s”, he added.
Using small nets, the volunteers managed to retrieve the suitcase that was spotted on the edge of Lake Merritt. The contents of the suitcase, however, revealed a grim and disturbing sight – the lifeless body of a murdered man concealed within.
Oakland police Captain Alan Yu has confirmed to the New York Post the discovery, but it remains unclear when the suitcase was discarded at the location.
The investigation into this disturbing incident is ongoing, as authorities work to unravel the circumstances surrounding this gruesome discovery by the lake.
“Part of the investigation is trying to determine where the body was could have floated from. It could be any part of the lake, and we’re looking at all those possible outcomes,” Yu told KTVU.
As per The post, cops also confirmed to CBS News that “it was being investigated as a homicide, with the victim’s identity withheld pending family notification”.
“It was initially unclear if the murdered man matched anyone reported as a missing person”, the reports said.
Local residents were taken aback by the discovery at a spot deemed a local oasis with a popular path for runners.
“It’s really scary for me, for a body to be around the neighbourhood here, it’s really scary,” witness Angela Massella told KTVU.
