NEW DELHI: After India’s convincing 99-run win over Australia in the second ODI, Indian captain KL Rahul expressed that scoring 400 runs gave the team a confidence boost. India secured the three-match ODI series with a 2-0 lead following their victory in the second match through the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method at the Holkar Cricket Stadium.
Reflecting on the match, Rahul commented on the pitch conditions, saying, “When I saw the wicket in the morning, I did not think it would spin so much. Putting 400 on the board gives you confidence.”
He also addressed the issue of selection and fielding errors, stating, “It is not really our decision to make (Selection). Our jobs are clear. Everyone who gets picked in the XI needs to focus on their job. We have dropped a few catches, but fielding under lights, it is challenging physically. The coaches are doing their best to keep the guys fit. Sometimes these errors happen. The commitment is always there, we will learn from it, brush it off, and get better in the next game.”
Looking ahead to upcoming matches and the World Cup, Rahul added, “Nothing is discussed, but guys coming back will want to make it count. With the World Cup only a couple of weeks away, guys will want to get into it. They need to get used to the challenges; they will be keen to get back onto the field.”
In the match itself, India posted a formidable total of 399/5 in their 50 overs, with key contributions from Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, and Ishan Kishan. Australia, chasing a target of 400, struggled and were reduced to 140/8 before a late partnership between Sean Abbott and Josh Hazlewood provided some entertainment. However, Australia was eventually bowled out for 217 in 28.2 overs.
Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja were the standout bowlers for India, with 3 wickets each. Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Shami also chipped in with crucial wickets.
Shreyas Iyer was named the ‘Player of the Match’ for his impressive century, and India sealed the series with a 2-0 lead with one match remaining.
