Anrich Nortje and Sisanda Magala ruled out of ICC World Cup; replacements added to the squad | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: South Africa’s preparations for the upcoming ODI World Cup in India have been disrupted as two key pacers, Anrich Nortje and Sisanda Magala, have been ruled out due to injuries, confirmed head coach Rob Walter on Thursday. In their place, bowling all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo and seamer Lizaad Williams have been drafted into the World Cup-bound squad.
Walter expressed disappointment at the loss of Nortje and Magala, stating, “It’s hugely disappointing for Anrich and Sisanda to be missing out on the 50-over World Cup. Both are quality players that add immense value to the Proteas.”
He continued, “We sympathize with their omission and will continue to provide all the necessary support as they work towards their return to competitive action.”

Anrich Nortje has been sidelined with a lower-back injury. During the second ODI against Australia, the 29-year-old seamer encountered back spasms, leading to comprehensive assessments and scans.
Meanwhile, Sisanda Magala is nursing a left-knee problem. Both players were initially included in South Africa’s 15-member squad for the prestigious tournament. However, with the team set to depart for India on Saturday, neither player could recover in time for the World Cup, necessitating the selection of replacements.
“This provides an opportunity for Andile and Lizaad on the global stage. Both players have been part of our winter programs, as well as having represented South Africa in the recent white-ball tour against Australia,” Walter remarked.
He added, “They offer great skill sets, and we’re excited to have them complete the 15-player squad for this year’s World Cup.”
Anrich Nortje’s absence is a significant setback for South Africa, given his status as one of the fastest bowlers in world cricket. With extensive experience playing in India, his express pace and ability to generate bounce make him a valuable asset for the Proteas across all formats of the game.
Andile Phehlukwayo has been brought in as a like-for-like replacement for Sisanda Magala. He recently demonstrated his batting prowess in the final ODI against Australia.
South Africa are scheduled to commence their World Cup campaign against Sri Lanka in New Delhi on October 7.
