Civil Aviation: Tezu airport upgraded: Arunachal Pradesh’s airport gets new facilities; details here

Minister for Civil Aviation and Steel, Jyotiraditya M Scindia, and Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Shri Pema Khandu will inaugurate the newly developed infrastructure at Tezu Airport on September 24, 2023. Tezu Airport, situated in the town of Tezu, is a domestic airport equipped with a single runway. Covering 212 acres of land, it is designed to accommodate ATR 72 type aircraft. The Airport Authority of India (AAI) carried out the development, responding on the state government’s request, at a cost of Rs 170 crore.
The project includes extending the runway to 1500m x 30m dimensions, constructing a new apron for two ATR 72 aircraft, a terminal building, and a combined fire station and air traffic control tower.

Under the Ministry of Civil Aviation’s RCS UDAN scheme, Tezu Airport commenced operations in 2018. Currently, it offers regular scheduled flights to Dibrugarh, Imphal, and Guwahati via Alliance Air and Flybig Airline.

Notable features of the terminal building include a 4000 sqm terminal area, a peak hour capacity of 300 passengers, five check-in counters (with three more planned for the future), two arrival carousels, and two aircraft parking bays suitable for ATR-72 aircraft.

In terms of sustainability, the airport boasts a double-insulated roofing system, energy-efficient HVAC and lighting systems, low-heat gain glazing, ECBC-compliant equipment, a solid waste management system, recycling of treated water for flushing and horticulture, integrated rainwater harvesting with a Sustainable Urban Drainage System, and the use of efficient water fixtures.

The Tezu Airport upgrade project aims to bring benefits such as increased capacity to handle higher traffic volumes, enhanced connectivity for the northeastern region with the rest of the country, a boost to tourism, trade, and job creation, and the promotion of infrastructure development and economic growth in the region.
Tezu, a small town situated on the banks of the Lohit River and the headquarters of Lohit District in Arunachal Pradesh, is renowned for its picturesque surroundings, characterized by lush green forests and rolling hills.
