Former Pakistan fast-bowler Shoaib Akhtar expressed his thoughts amid this rain-impacted matchday, stating blatantly that rain had saved the men in green.
While posting a video on X, formerly known as Twitter, the 48-year-old penned, “Well. I don’t see this starting again. Colombo ki baarish is crazy”.
However, in the video, he went on to insist, “Baarish ne bacha liya humein finally; phle India faas gya tha humare against, baarish ne bacha liya; aaj hum fans gaye thhey India ke saamne, Baarish ne humein bacha liya.” (Rain has saved us finally, the rain came to save India last time; today, we were in danger, and rain came to save us.)
The interruption occurred with India at 147-2 in 24.1 overs, having been asked to bat first in this 50-over tournament, which serves as a precursor to the ODI World Cup set to take place in India.
At the point of the delay, the Indian team had their star players, Virat Kohli (eight runs not out) and KL Rahul (17 runs not out), on the crease. However, the inclement weather forced the players to retreat from the field, and the rain intensified shortly afterwards.
The opening pair of skipper Rohit Sharma (56 runs) and Shubman Gill (58 runs) had previously put a commendable stand, setting a formidable partnership of 121 runs. However, the duo was sent back to the pavilion by the skilful leg-spinner Shadab Khan and left-arm speedster Shaheen Shah Afridi, respectively.
Tournament organizers included a last-minute reserve day for this match. This precautionary measure was taken due to a previous group-stage encounter between India and Pakistan being abandoned because of persistent rain in Pallekele.
