In this five-match series, Australia took a commanding 2-0 lead as they geared up for next month’s World Cup in India. Australia amassed a formidable total of 392-8 after being put in to bat, and they bowled out South Africa for 269.
Warner showcased his destructive prowess by smashing 106 runs off 93 balls, providing Australia with a blistering start. Labuschagne, on the other hand, notched up 124 runs off 99 deliveries, raising questions about his omission from the World Cup squad. Labuschagne had originally joined the South Africa tour as a replacement for the injured Steve Smith and had already played a pivotal role in Australia’s victory in the opening game, where he scored an unbeaten 80 and earned the Man of the Match accolade.
Australia’s opening partnership of Warner and Travis Head raced to 101-0 inside the first 10 overs before Head was spectacularly caught by a diving David Miller off the bowling of Tabraiz Shamsi, having contributed 64 runs from just 36 balls. Although spinner Shamsi removed Australian skipper Mitchell Marsh with the very next ball, it did little to slow down the visitors. Warner and Labuschagne combined to amass 151 runs for the third wicket.
Warner’s century marked his 20th in ODIs, while Labuschagne, in only his second ODI century, struck an impressive 19 fours and a six. Josh Inglis also made a rapid 50 from 37 balls, as Australia’s batting assault left South Africa’s bowlers searching for answers. Australia set a formidable target, falling just seven runs short of the record they had set against England in 2016.
South Africa’s opening pair of Quinton de Kock (45) and Temba Bavuma put together an 81-run partnership, but the wrist-spinning skills of Adam Zampa (4-48) proved pivotal as he dismissed Bavuma for 46 and Heinrich Klaasen for 49. When David Miller (49) was trapped leg before wicket by Nathan Ellis, South Africa’s hopes realistically diminished, and they were bowled out in the 42nd over.
The third ODI will take place in Potchefstroom on Tuesday.
