MUMBAI: The accused arrested in connection with the murder of a 24-year-old woman flight attendant died by suicide in the toilet of Andheri lock-up on Friday.
The accused Vikram Athwal (35), a garbage collection staff, was arrested by Powai police within 12 hours of the discovery of the crime late on Sunday, following questioning of around 45 housekeeping staffers along with technical assistance.
On Friday morning, the official got suspicious after noticing that the accused who had stepped into the toilet at Andheri lock-up was not responding to repeated calls. Following that, they broke the door and found him hanging.
“The door was broken and Athwal was found hanging from the water pipe in the toilet. He used his own cloth to hang himself,” said Powai police.
He was supposed to be produced before the Andheri court on Friday after completion of three days police custody.
After his arrest, Police had also recovered the weapon and the blood stain uniform which he cleaned in the bathroom after committing the offence.
The flight attendant, identified as Rupal Ogrey, was found dead with her throat slit in an apartment in Andheri. She hailed from Chhattisgarh and came to Mumbai in April for training with the airline.
“Athwal confessed that his intention was to frighten the woman and assault her. However, as she fought him, he ended up stabbing her twice in the neck,” police said after his arrest, adding, that the preliminary postmortem report ruled out sexual assault.
