NEW DELHI: A 36-year-old senior manager with Amazon was shot in the head from point-blank range by a group of four to five armed assailants in northeast Delhi’s Bhajanpura late on Tuesday night. His relative too was shot and is battling for life. The men fired in the air while fleeing, locals claimed.
Late on Wednesday evening, Delhi Police’s special cell cracked the case and nabbed the prime suspect, Sameer (18), sources claimed. He is the kingpin of an emerging “Maya gang” and has been allegedly involved in at least four murders. He is learned to have claimed that the man he killed, Harpreet Gill, had slapped his associate, a minor, last month and that he wanted to avenge that insult.

Police are verifying his claims and a manhunt has been launched to nab his associates, many of whom could be minors. Another suspect is learned to have been arrested by police late on Wednesday evening but the cops remained tightlipped.
Gill lived with his family in Bhajanpura. His maternal uncle, Govind Singh (32), is admitted in hospital and recuperating.
Police received information about the incident from the hospital around 11.53pm on Tuesday. According to police, Gill was shot in the head and was declared dead at the hospital. “The bullet entered from the right side of his head behind the ear and exited from the other side. Singh, too, was shot in the head and admitted to Lok Nayak Hospital,” said a senior officer.
Police investigations have revealed that the two men were passing through the Subhash Vihar area around 11.30pm on their bikes. The assailants, riding a scooter and a motorcycle, intercepted them and opened fire.
Hearing the noise, residents came out and discovered Gill lying unconscious in a pool of blood on the road while the other person was gasping for breath and crying for help. This is when someone informed police.
A family member said the assailants fired in the air when residents came out of their houses and then fled the spot. Police said crime and forensic teams had found three empty cartridges of 7.65mm at the spot.

Once robbery was ruled out, since their valuables were intact, the cops started exploring the possibility of personal enmity. However, nothing that could possibly lead to murder could be found.
They then scanned footage from around a dozen CCTV cameras in the area to check the routes taken by the shooters. “In one of the videos, we spotted the attackers crossing a lane on a scooter. The rider was hiding his face with a handkerchief,” a senior police officer said.
Police circulated the footage and generated local and technical intelligence that indicated the involvement of the “Maya gang”. Their homes were raided but they were missing. Most of the gang members were found to be juveniles and cops had no official record on them.
The cops then unofficially contacted a shelter home official to gather some details on the juvenile offenders, a source said.
DCP (northeast) Joy Tirkey said that they had registered a case of murder and under the Arms Act and Gill’s body had been handed over to his family after autopsy.
