NEW DELHI: Darwin Nunez‘s impactful performance from the bench propelled Liverpool to a thrilling 2-1 victory over Newcastle United in the Premier League on Sunday. The victory showcased Liverpool’s resilience after captain Virgil van Dijk received a straight red card early in the first half.
The match began with an unexpected twist as Trent Alexander-Arnold, who had already received an early yellow card, inadvertently gifted Newcastle United the lead in the 25th minute. A mis-controlled ball allowed Anthony Gordon to capitalise and slide it past goalkeeper Alisson Becker.
Liverpool’s situation took a further blow just after two minutes later when Virgil van Dijk was shown a straight red card by referee John Brooks for a challenge on Alexander Isak just outside the penalty area. With the home side down to ten men, Newcastle seemed poised to break their 13-game winless streak against Liverpool in the Premier League.
