Chandrayaan 3 Moon Landing Time: Chandrayaan-3 landing at 6.04pm: India eyes moon again, may have better chances this time | India News

BENGALURU: Four years after success eluded India and Isro, they are on the cusp of making history again by landing a probe in the polar region of the lunar surface. If all goes well, Vikram, the Chandrayaan 3 lander will touchdown at 6.04pm with Pragyan (the rover) in its belly.
Vikram is also better prepared to overcome challenges of landing this time. Among other things — TOI has reported these in detail earlier — it will be able to withstand landing at greater velocities (3 metres/second) than earlier.Isro has also made several other changes learning from the failure of Chandrayaan-2.
“The mission is on schedule. Systems are undergoing regular checks. Smooth sailing is continuing. The Mission Operations Complex (MOX) is buzzed with energy & excitement!,” Isro said Tuesday, allaying fears of a “Plan B” at this stage. It also released images captured by the Lander Position Detection Camera (LPDC) from an altitude of about 70km, taken on August 19 and those taken by Lander Imager Camera-4 on August 20. “The LPDC images assist the lander module in determining its position (latitude and longitude) by matching them against an onboard moon reference map,” Isro added.
Landing & 1st to polar region
Isro chairman S Somanath told TOI: “The overall process may take around 30 minutes or so.” On the last 15+ minutes, which was described as “15 minutes of terror” during Chandrayaan-2, Somanath said: “The exact timeline would depend on the mission: where the lander module is, how its systems are working, the environment there, whether it needs can go ahead with the first site visible or choose another one based on hazard detection… There are a lot of variables, so we don’t want to get into the exact number of minutes.”

If Vikram succeeds, India will become only the fourth country to soft-land on Moon and the first to do so in the polar region given that Russia’s Luna-25 crashed uncontrolled just days ahead of its planned landing.
Pragyan will then emerge from Vikram and hit the lunar surface using a ramp before beginning its exploration. Both the lander and rover are designed to function for one lunar (14 Earth) days.

What India’s Chandrayaan-3 mission looks like in numbers

Post-landing science & challenges
As momentous as the landing would be, Isro has equally focussed on the science the instruments it has packed on the lander and rover would do. As one senior Isro scientist put it: “Our job ends only after Vikram and Pragyan complete the lunar day (14 Earth days) and landing is the first step towards ensuring that.”

Upon landing, Vikram would also need to handle some challenges — lunar dust, for instance. Firing on-board engines close to the surface results in backward flow of hot gases & dust. Lunar dust is miniscule & hard. Its negative charge makes it stick to surfaces, causing a disruption in deployment mechanisms, solar panel performance and so on.
For Vikram to carry out experiments, even bring out Pragyan, it would be important to manage the lunar dust and stay healthy. Once this is done comes Moon’s extreme temperatures and vacuum — a lunar day or night lasts 14 Earth days. This results in extreme surface temperature variations while the ambient pressure of the surface is a hard vacuum making it a hostile environment for the lander & rover.
