According to authorities, both areas lie along the Ganga river, where the groundwater level remains high generally, and heavy rainfall in the region may have further increased the level.
‘Encroachments of all sorts should be removed on priority’
However, experts pointed out that the natural course of rivers and their tributaries have been encroached upon which may be causing this peculiar problem.
“The two river systems, Ganga and Yamuna, flow through the foothill towns and constant construction in these areas is pushing water-replete aquifers to ooze out excess water. Encroachments of all sorts should be removed on priority,” said Reenu Paul, Doon-based senior advocate and environmentalist.
A scientist from Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar added that “either liquefaction or seepage due to heavy rains may be behind this situation.”
Rishikesh SDM Yogesh Mehra, when queried, said, “In the entire area, including Rishikesh, we have installed over 16 water suction pumps in water-logged areas and have demanded more water pumps from the disaster management authorities. Those affected are being given compensation and adequate health services. A scientific survey of affected areas would also be done to understand the reason behind the water-logging and to find a long-term solution.”
