NEW DELHI: The Women’s Premier League turned out to be a huge success as it helped give a much-needed boost to women’s cricket in India. And if Indian women’s cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur is to be believed, the audience showed more interest in WPL than IPL.

“WPL was a game changer for us. That tournament was so good. Everyone loved it back home. The response we got, trust me, some of the audience was more interested in women’s IPL than men’s because it was something new to watch,” Harmanpreet said on Daggers & Lyds podcast.

Organised by the BCCI, the franchise T20 cricket league took place from March 4 to March 26 this year. The tournament featured five teams and a total of 22 matches, all held at Brabourne Stadium and DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai.
The franchise-based T20 cricket league occurred between March 4 and March 26 this year. The competition showcased five participating teams, engaging in a collective of 22 matches. All the games were played at Brabourne Stadium and DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai.
“They really liked it. Hopefully, we’ll add more teams. I don’t know when it will happen but eventually it will. We do have very good talent back home. Those girls should get this opportunity,” she further added.
Mumbai Indians crowned champions of the inaugural season, defeating the Delhi Capitals by seven wickets in the final.
Harmanpreet also emphasised the importance of the long format in women’s cricket and called for more international and domestic red-ball fixtures.
“This year we have two Tests – one against England and one against Australia – and I hope those games can make a huge impact on women’s cricket and hopefully in the future we will keep getting more Test matches.
“We have to bring back Test matches in women’s cricket because it’s very important for women’s cricket,” she said.
