Jyothi Yarraji breaks own 100m hurdles national record to win bronze medal in World University Games | More sports News

NEW DELHI: Star Indian athlete Jyothi Yarraji achieved a remarkable feat at the World University Games in Chengdu by smashing her own national record in the women’s 100m hurdles and winning a bronze medal.

The 23-year-old clocked an impressive time of 12.78 seconds, improving upon her previous national mark of 12.82 seconds set in October 2022.

It was India’s first ever 100m hurdles medal at the World University Games.
In the same event, Viktoria Forster of Slovakia secured the gold medal with a time of 12.72 seconds, while Yanni Wu of China claimed the silver, finishing with a time of 12.76 seconds.
In another outstanding performance, Amlan Borgohain, a national record holder sprinter, clinched a bronze medal in the men’s 200m race with a season’s best time of 20.55 seconds. Borgohain narrowly missed his own national record of 20.52 seconds.

The gold medal in the men’s 200m race was won by Tsebo Isadore Matsoso of South Africa, who clocked 20.36 seconds, and Yudai Nishi of Japan secured the silver medal with a time of 20.46 seconds.
Indian athletics’ first medal at the World University Games came in the 2013 edition in Kazan, Russia, where shot putter Inderjeet Singh won a silver. Inderjeet went on to win a gold in the 2015 edition in Gwangju, South Korea.
In the 2017 edition in Taipei, Sanjivani Jadhav won a silver in 10,000m race before Dutee Chand clinched a 100m gold in 2019 in Naples, Italy.
