NEW DELHI: Pakistan and defending champions South Korea played out a hard-fought thrilling 1-1 draw in the ongoing Asian Champions Trophy at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Hockey Stadium on Friday.

The encounter started with a quiet first quarter, with both teams cautiously probing each other’s defence, creating chances but failing to convert them into goals. The tension built up as the clock ticked, and it wasn’t until the second quarter that the game witnessed its first breakthrough. Pakistan’s Abdul Shahid found the back of the net in the 18th minute, putting the Men in Green in the lead.
Pakistan’s captain, Umar Bhutta, had more reasons to celebrate as he was felicitated by Hockey India for reaching a remarkable milestone – featuring in his 200th international match.

The match saw its share of drama, with both teams earning penalty corners but unable to capitalise on these set-piece opportunities. Bhutta received a green card in the 20th minute, while his team managed to maintain their 1-0 lead at halftime.
The third quarter remained goalless, although the intensity of the game did not wane. A player from the Korean side had to be substituted due to injury, adding to the intrigue of the contest.
The final quarter witnessed a surge in tempo as both teams pressed on the accelerator to break the deadlock. However, some physical play led to a couple of injury breaks, creating tension on the field. Pakistan’s Aqeel Ahmad was shown a green card in the 48th minute, while Korea’s Park received the same colour three minutes later.

In the 53rd minute, the game’s crucial moment arrived when Pakistan conceded a penalty stroke. South Korea’s Jihun Yang stepped up to the challenge and successfully converted the stroke, levelling the score at 1-1.
Both teams fought tooth and nail in the dying minutes, creating great chances and earning a few more penalty corners. However, neither side could find the decisive goal, and the match ended in a hard-fought 1-1 draw.
After the riveting encounter, Korea will be facing China in their next match, while Pakistan are set to take on Japan in the ongoing Asian Champions Trophy.
