Delhi Ordinance Bill in Lok Sabha: Amit Shah attacks AAP, asks opposition to think about people of Delhi, not alliance | India News

NEW DELHI: The Lok Sabha on Thursday passed the Delhi Services Bill (The Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023) after a day-long debate during which the BJP and the AAP traded barbs over corruption.

As Speaker Om Birla put the Bill to vote, the opposition walked out of the House. Soon after the Bill was passed, the parliamentary affairs minister moved a resolution to suspend lone AAP member Sushil Kumar Rinku for the remainder of the session.
Reacting to the passage of the Bill, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal lashed out at the BJP for “back-stabbing the people of Delhi”.

“Every time BJP promised to give full statehood to Delhi. In 2014, PM Modi himself said that on becoming the Prime Minister, he would give full statehood to Delhi. But today these people stabbed the people of Delhi in the back. Don’t believe anything of Modi ji from now on,” said Kejriwal.
Earlier, initiating the debate on the Delhi Services Bill in Lok Sabha, Union home minister Amit Shah launched a scathing attack on Aam Aadmi Party which rules Delhi and is opposing the Bill tooth and nail. He accused the AAP of indulging in confrontation instead of governance.

“The AAP government has indulged in corruption and it is opposing the Bill because it wants to hide its misdeeds. It wants to control the vigilance department so that crores spent on CM’s bungalow is not questioned,” the Union home minister said.
He also attacked the opposition for supporting AAP and said “please don’t compromise the interests of people of Delhi to save your fledgling alliance.” “Despite your alliance, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will win majority in the Lok Sabha elections and return for a third term. So do not support AAP’s corruption for a losing cause,” he said.

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal reacted strongly to Amit Shah’s remarks in Lok Sabha. He said Amit Shah did not have any valid arguments in support of the Bill. “Amit Shah knows that he is doing something wrong,” Kejriwal tweeted.
“This Bill will make people of Delhi slaves. It will make them helpless. INDIA will not let this happen,” he said.
The AAP had made opposition to the Delhi Services Bill a precondition to join the opposition alliance INDIA. It threatened to walk out of the alliance ahead of the second meeting in Bengaluru if the Congress did not openly oppose the Bill.+

The Union home minister said the Constitution empowers Centre to make laws for Delhi-NCR. He refuted allegations that the Bill introduced by the Centre breaches the Supreme Court judgment – which had given the elected government of Delhi the power to control services except on three issues.
Responding to Amit Shah’s attack, Congress leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Choudhary said the Bill is an attack on the federal structure of the country and is against the spirit of the Constitution.
“The Centre is trying to usurp the power of an elected government in Delhi,” the Congress leader alleged.
The Bill seeks to replace the National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Ordinance, 2023, on the control of services in Delhi.
The Centre had promulgated the Ordinance on May 19, 2023. This was eight days after the Supreme Court granted more powers to the Delhi government over services in the national capital.
