The incident took place at Khutadi Sarlambe village in Shahapur during the construction of the third phase of Samruddhi Expressway.
The girder machine is a special-purpose mobile gantry crane used in bridge construction.
Their bodies have been sent to Shahapur Government Hospital for autopsy. The injured have been shifted to nearby Shahapur Gramin hospital.
Local police and highways administration workers have pulled out the workers trapped under the girders with the help of cranes.
Police, NDRF and fire brigade personnel along with local agencies are engaged in rescue operation.
Maharashtra chief minister Eknath Shinde expressed condolences and announced ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the kin of deceased.
Expressing grief over the incident, deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said an order has been given to investigate the incident through experts.
Expressing condolences, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “Pained by the tragic mishap in Shahapur, Maharashtra. My deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.”
PM Modi also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF to the next of kin of each deceased.
